Shattering The Glass Ceiling In Law Firms And Building A Path To Partnership And Beyond
Written by Sam Abeysekera on Nov. 9th 2020
Are you a senior woman associate (5+ yrs post qualification) either in “Biglaw”, a medium-sized firm, or a boutique law firm, trying to break through the glass ceiling into partnership?

Maybe you’ve been a senior associate for 5, 10, or even 15 years, and each day you wonder when it will be your turn.

If that’s you, you’re NOT alone — as seen in the latest American Bar Association reports, which are mostly unchanged over the last twenty years.

How do we change this picture?

Think about this as an example.

If you bill at $200 per hour, the client gets charged 3-4 times that.

That’s $200/hr to you, $600/hr (4 x 200 - your cost, 200, for this example) to your managing partner.

So, in many ways, it pays to keep you there and rotate lawyers when they leave, UNLESS you can bring in the business.

But the problem many women tell me is, “oh, if I just had some leads, I’d be able to build a book of business and break-through.”

...But when they get some leads, they can’t convert them into clients (because lawyers aren’t trained for sales skills)

...or it’s not the right type of client

Or their service delivery system is screwed up, and they get stuck with hourly billing, loss of lifestyle, and not knowing how to approach the client about charging differently.

The problem is never just one thing. Everything works together.

To be effective and scale your practice for partnership WITH PREDICTABILITY, you need a complete approach that:
  1. Identifies clients
  2. Generates leads
  3. Converts prospects to clients
  4. Delivers value-added legal services

So, we’re all celebrating some glass on the floor with our new female Vice President, Kamala Harris, shattering one glass ceiling.

But it can be YOUR turn too.

Let’s get started!
