It’s really about knowing how to use technology that will define us. 

Here are the top five problems lawyers face when landing clients in the digital world: 

#1 Getting locked into expensive contracts with digital agencies

Sure, everyone should prosper, but I’ve seen lawyers so anxious to increase their lead generation that these contracts end up sinking what used to be a decent law practice. 

And then, lawyers become obsessed with their website and getting the right SEO but leave NO time to developing social media. 

That’s like going gardening with your high-heels on :) 

#2 Digital agencies that hide the ball on what they are doing

If you don’t have some insight into your agency's process to find your leads, you never really know if they are targeting the right people in the right way and whether it will be consistent month after month. 

It’s a glorified gamble.

#3 Letting technology be the master, instead of being the master of technology 

It’s a myth that technology is better at finding your clients. 

Technology just magnifies manual results. 

If you don’t precisely define the client segment and type you’re looking for, you end up getting a list of the same kind of general leads as before...just a more giant list, which you now must plow through. 

Instead, criteria must be developed, defined, primed, and proven on a small scale first before the technology is leveraged on a bigger scale.

#4 Unqualified leads from online lawyer referral databases 

While it may be gratifying to see your online profile listed, it’s important to remember that many of these databases end up providing a place for people seeking free legal advice or who cannot afford to pay. 

Therefore, this is not a good strategy for lead generation. 

Remember that many of these have ratings that reflect whether your profile is complete vs your legal abilities! So if you use them, just make sure you claim AND complete the profile. 

#5 Being dependent on eating out rather than knowing how to cook for yourself.  

By this, I mean that if you rely on a third party to find your leads, you are like someone who can’t cook a thing for themselves. You’ll always need someone else to help get your meals. 

But, if you take the time to learn how to generate leads, you can either do it yourself, train someone in-house, or be more selective in a digital agency's services. 

Either way, you’re covered for life.
